Founded in 1829 by George IV and the Duke of Wellington, KCL, as it is generally known, can lay claim to being the third oldest university in England, although this is contested, not least by UCL. Its famous alumni are numerous, including romantic poet John Keats, the Prince Imperial and son of the French Emperor Louis-Napoleon, and author Thomas Hardy.
