Durham

Durham University was founded in 1832 by William van Mildert, the last Prince Bishop of the city, and the Dean and Chapter. This followed two unsuccessful attempts to establish a university in Durham by King Henry VIII and Oliver Cromwell. In 1837, the Queen allowed Durham Castle, previously a royal palace, to be used by the university.
