Royal Regiment of Scotland

The Royal Regiment of Scotland is comprised of 14 regiments raised in the 17th and 18th centuries. It's motto 'Nemo Me Impune Lacessit' (No one attacks me with impunity), is one long associated with Scottish regiments, and has it's origins in the early history of Scotland. Legend has it, that as vikings led a night attack on the Scots, one of them trod on a thistle and his cries of pain alerted the Scots to the vikings prescence allowing them to be fought off. The 'me' of the motto originally referred to the thistle, but has since come to signify all Scottish regiments.
