Royal Tank Regiment

Tanks were first used at Flers in September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme in World War I. The arrival of tanks on the battlefield signalled the beginning of the end for trench warfare. In July 1917, the regiment was given official status, separating it from the Machine Gun Corps.
